Homage to the American Hotel

L.A. artist Joseph Montalvo (known as Nuke) and his UTI crew have painted a mural honoring the history of the American Hotel, a landmark at Hewitt Street and Traction Avenue, the epicenter of the DTLA Arts District. Located in the lot behind the American —  home of the punk dive Al's Bar from 1980-2001 — the mural celebrates the 1905 building's creation as the first hotel for black patrons in Los Angeles and memorializes outcasts and artists that have lived at the American over the past century.
